For those who are unavailable to view events live, we archive all the webcasts free - at no charge, to place on our clients' websites to display as on=demand video. On-demand Video is a "re-broadcast" playable at any time from any computer using a Player on the web page.
The Basic Webcast Process
The basic process is
the same for all types of events and broadcasts, the only difference being the
scale of the production:
1. Audio and Video are captured with appropriate equipment. Anything from a
single digital camcorder to multiple cameras and live video mixers can be used,
much like a Live TV Broadcast.
2. The resulting output is fed into a computer which is running encoding
software.
3. This encoding
software converts the stream into the correct format for live streaming. This
could be something like Adobe Flash Media Encoder, Microsoft Silverlight or
Windows Media Encoder.
4. The encoded output is then transmitted via an ethernet cable over the
broadband internet connection to our real-time streaming servers.
5. This stream is then broadcast, in real time, to multiple viewers via a
website link which could be situated either on a free page on our website or on
your own website itself, at no extra charge.
To be successful, a Webcasting Event requires thorough planning and testing. It
is essential to try and maximize your viewer's experience.
In order to include
the widest possible audience as we webcast your Live Event, we need to take care
of 3 key factors:
- Network Capacity
- Server Capacity
- Audience
Capabilities
Network Capacity:
You need to determine the maximum upload speed of the Internet connection at the location of the Live Event Webcast. What type of connection is available at the location? Has the connection been in use for a period of time? Has it been tested? Is there a backup Internet connection should the first one fail? What is the maximum upload speed for the connection?
Server Capacity:
Server Capacity is something that is our problem - not yours. We use multiple, load-balanced servers with connections to a solid OC-192 backbone. Utilizing Flash Media Server 4 our hardware can handle the highest capacity loads.
Audience Capabilities:
Before the Live Event Webcast you need to fully assess the Internet connection speeds available to your audience in general. Do most of your users have broadband or dial-up connections? Do they run Windows or Apple based computers? What media players do they have installed on their computers? Its best to cater to the lowest common denominator, sacrificing some element of quality in favour of speed and reliability.
When it comes to pricing for Live Event Webcasting, cost is dependant on 3 factors:
1. Event duration in
hours
2. The Stream Quality required for the broadcast (HD or standard definition - we
recommend standard def).
3. Audience size - the number of remote viewers
These elements affect bandwidth, which (apart from the audio/video production)
is what you will be paying for. Its important not to over-estimate the number of
viewers - a common mistake by rookie webcasters, since you then end up paying
for bandwidth you never use. The best method of estimating viewership is to put
a registration process in place, keeping in mind that there is a typical
attrition rate of anywhere from 15%-30%.
